The T3 terminal at Tan Son Nhat Airport is expected to be completed by April 30 next year, two months ahead of schedule. Once operational, it will be the largest domestic terminal in the country, serving 20 million passengers, raising the total processing capacity at Tan Son Nhat Airport to 50 million passengers per year.
Mr. Le Khac Hong, Head of the T3 Tan Son Nhat Terminal Project Management Board, stated that all items of the terminal have basically completed the structural phase, and the units are accelerating the architectural construction and remaining tasks. Among these, the most important part, the steel roof structure weighing 7,500 tons, was finished in September after 120 days of expedited work; meanwhile, the first layer of aluminum roofing for the passenger terminal has also been completed, covering 42,000 m2, achieving 100%.
The T3 terminal consists of one basement level and four above-ground levels, with a total constructed floor area of 112,500 m2. The project includes four main components: the passenger terminal, a multi-storey parking garage combined with non-aeronautical services, an elevated bridge in front of the terminal, and an aircraft parking area.
As of September 17, the raw structure inside terminal T3 has been completed, featuring a framework and roof made of steel. The contractor is currently working on the ceiling, installing glass partitions, and tiling the floor.
The waiting areas for passengers, security screening, check-in counters, and more are also nearing completion after a year of construction.
The access points between the levels of terminal T3 are under construction. To date, the terminal has installed 6 out of 39 elevators and 16 out of 55 escalators, with completion expected in December. The aircraft parking area outside has been completed two months ago and is currently undergoing inspection procedures before coming into operation.
The functional areas of Terminal 3 are gradually taking shape. The terminal features 90 traditional airline check-in counters, 20 automated bag drop counters, and 42 check-in kiosks, along with 27 boarding gates (including 13 with jet bridges and 14 with buses), 6 baggage handling islands for departures, 10 baggage claim islands for arrivals, and 25 security checkpoints.
A team of workers is installing glass partitions on the floors of Terminal 3, with this phase of the project expected to be completed by the end of this year.
More than 2,000 engineers and construction workers are involved in the project, working on multiple fronts to expedite the construction.
Mr. Ha Van Thanh (center) is applying rust-proof paint to the steel structures of the terminal. “This is an important project for the city, so everyone is striving to finish the terminal on time,” said the 43-year-old worker.
The commercial-office complex is also shaping up. The project is designed with green architecture, incorporating natural elements and landscaping to create a friendly environment.
The elevated road system at the terminal is currently under construction and is preparing for connection, with completion expected by February next year.
Alongside structural work, equipment and machinery are being imported and installed according to the schedule for each component. Large-scale components such as air conditioning ducts, fire protection systems, and water supply and drainage systems have been over 90% installed in the B2 level of the commercial building, as well as in the B1 level and the passenger terminal.
Once completed, Terminal 3 will help reduce the load on T1 Tan Son Nhat airport while also sharing operational capacity with Long Thanh airport in Dong Nai.
